Learners Permit


No appointment is necessary to write your Class 7 Learner's licence, but you must be at least 14 years old . If you are under 18 years of age you must have your parent or guardian accompany you to our office with their own identification to sign a Parental Consent Form. This form is available at our office.

The class 7 knowledge test is available in many languages. Please contact us to find out if your language is available.


Before you write your knowledge test you must provide satisfactory identification. For a list of acceptable identification please click here or call us at (403) 288-3333.


Once your identity is confirmed and entered into the Motor Vehicles system you will purchase a permit to write the knowledge test.

Please see the list of registration fees for the current cost. If you happen to fail the test you may take it again the next day, however you will have to pay the fee each time you try the test.


After you pass your knowledge test you will be given a vision test which you must also pass.


At this point you can be issued your Class 7 Operator's licence. It is valid for 5 years and please see the list of registration fees for the current cost.


Road Testing


A rental vehicle is available for your road test.
Please call to book the vehicle for your appointment.


If you are 16 years of age or older, have a valid Class 7 licence, and have met all Graduated Driver's licence requirements, if applicable, you can take a road test.

The examiner is an licensed officer authorized to conduct road test in Alberta.

The examiner will do a brief inspection of the vehicle to make sure the brake lights, signal lights and door latches are working properly. You cannot take passengers or pets on the road test with you.

The length of the basic road test usually takes about 30 minutes. The advanced road test usually takes about one hour. If you do not pass the test you can take it again as soon as the next day. You will need to purchase another Road Test Permit for each road test.


When you pass your road test your Class 7 Operator's licence will be reclassified as a Class 5. This will take only a few minutes after your return from the road test. Please see the list of registration fees for the current cost. Minors will need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian at this time.


The requirements for a Class 4 Operator's licence is slightly different. There is a special Class 4 knowledge test and vision test. Before you take your road test you must pick up a medical examination form to be completed by your doctor. The form is available at our office.

Reinstatement

Drivers who have been previously licensed and are coming off suspension or drivers who are applying for a restricted or interlock licence may be required to pass another knowledge test. Please see us in person with your identification to inquire.

Translators

If English is not your first language and you find you need a translator for the completion of your knowledge tests, please visit Alberta Transportation's website for details. A staff member may also act as a translator. Our Staff is authorized to conduct Oral Tests. Please contact us to arrange an appointment for the Oral test.

Oral Knowledge Tests

English audio and oral translated knowledge tests may be made available to clients who: Are unable to speak or comprehend the English language. Have poor reading skills and have difficulty understanding the written test. Have a medical condition such as dyslexia. Headphones are available to clients who choose to have the computer read out the questions. Also, our staff are authorized to conduct oral tests as a substitute.
